Obtaining Credit Cards With Bad Credit

Having bad credit does not necessarily prevent one from getting a credit card. In fact, simply by following the tips below one may be able to obtain a credit card even if they have filed for bankruptcy in the past!

Apply With The Current Banking Institution First

It is much more likely that one will be approved by a bank that they have already accounts with. For this reason one should try their current banking institution first.

Apply For a Retail Credit Card

Try applying for a credit card at a retail store such as Sears. There are many stores that offer credit cards to people with less than optimal credit, and it is much more likely that one will be approved by these stores than by a bank. After the application is accepted and the credit card is received, it is best to make small purchases to start out with, and be sure to pay the bill each month. One could even pay more than is owed to lower the interest rate of their credit card.

Get a Friend or Family Member to Co-Sign the Application

Try asking a family member or friend to co-sign for the credit card. Of course it is a good idea to pick someone who has good credit to increase the chances of being accepted. Keep in mind however that any bad decisions made by the owner of the credit card will affect the credit of the co-signer.

Resort to Applying for a Secured Credit Card

Apply for a secured credit card if all else fails. You will be required to open and maintain a savings account as security for your line of credit. Your credit line will be a percentage of your deposit.
